Nunawading is a vibrant eastern suburb of Melbourne, 18 kilometres from the CBD, serving as a major retail and administrative centre within the City of Whitehorse and City of Manningham. With a population of 12,413 (2021 census) and a density of 2,299 people per km², Nunawading offers excellent urban amenities and transport connectivity for families and professionals.
Covering an area of 5.4 km² at 130m elevation, Nunawading is perfectly positioned at the intersection of Whitehorse and Springvale Roads. The suburb benefits from the modern Nunawading Railway Station (opened 2010 with grade separation) and direct Eastern Freeway access, providing excellent connectivity to Melbourne CBD and surrounding areas.
The name Nunawading derives from an Aboriginal word meaning either "battlefield" or "ceremonial ground" and originally applied to a vast area including Box Hill, Blackburn, Mitcham, Forest Hill and Vermont. Originally known as Tunstall in the 1870s (named after the famous English pottery town), the area was centred on brick and clay production. The civic centre opened in 1968 and served as the administrative centre for the City of Nunawading until incorporation into the City of Whitehorse in 1994.
Nunawading is renowned for the MegaMile retail strip along Whitehorse Road, which features Melbourne's largest concentration of bulk goods retailers including furniture, whitegoods, motor vehicles, hardware and electrical goods. The area includes major businesses like Pacific Brands clothing factory, brick production facilities, and the head office of Bird Observation & Conservation Australia.
The suburb offers quality educational facilities including Whitehorse Primary School (formed from merger of Springview and Nunawading Primary schools in 2010), St Phillip's Catholic Primary School, Mount Pleasant Road Primary School, and Nunawading Christian College.
Nunawading boasts exceptional recreational facilities including Tunstall Park, the famous Nunawading Swimming Club (largest in Southern Hemisphere), and various sporting clubs. The suburb is also notable as a filming location for the soap opera "Neighbours" and houses the large Seventh-day Adventist campus on Central Road with church, offices, and Coronella Retirement Village.
The suburb has a strong sporting culture with teams including Nunawading City FC (NPL2 Victoria), Nunawading Lions (Eastern Football League), Nunawading Cricket Club (Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association), and Nunawading Spectres basketball team. The area also features sites of historical entertainment venues including the former Wobbies World amusement park.
